About the Centre

Cardinal Wilfrid Napier has taken a passionate interest in the plight of recovering addicts and has committed himself to the creation of a residential care centre to reintegrate them back into society.

Will you join him in making this dream a reality?

The Centre will be the main legacy project of His Eminence Wilfrid Cardinal Napier OFM.

It also gives expression to Pope Francis’s call for practical actions to carry forward the message of the Year of Mercy.

The Napier Centre 4 Healing will be an after care facility for post-rehab addiction residents, offering a holistic approach to healing. The Centre will be open to all denominations and a strong effort will be made to help residents reconnect with their spiritual roots. The final phase of the programme will include training for employment of some kind, in order to give recovering addicts a sense of ownership of their own lives, together with purpose and hope for the future.

    Support The Centre

The Cardinal has already donated a site – Ekukhanyeni, the place of light – which is a former Catholic boarding school near Verulam. The initial facilities are being prepared to accept our first residents early in 2019. A private donor has provided funds to start the process of refurbishment but several million will be needed in total for the whole site. Moreover, funding is needed so we can provide a sustainable one-year programme that is necessary. We estimate that it will cost R10 000 per resident per month with a total capacity of 15 residents.

You can give funds, volunteer your professional services, offer building materials or give monthly supplies. If you reside outside of South Africa we gladly welcome your support and can assist you to do so.

    Our Goal

The project seeks to address an urgent need. There are literally thousands of people addicted to whoonga and other substances in Durban, many of whom end up living on the streets. Those who do want to transform their lives cannot afford the prohibitively high costs of private rehabilitation centres. There are very few low-cost state-run facilities and their programmes are often too short.

Already our sister organisation, the Denis Hurley Centre, is working with street addicts to prepare them for rehab programmes in the only Government-funded centre that is available.

The Napier Centre will expand this into a bigger and more effective response so we can truly have an impact: for the addicts, for their families and for our city.
